Monday Morning Star Count 2014/21

Another busy week and lots of family time, which is always awesome!  I played around with placement for my Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt.  So many choices!  One part of me just wants to plan as I go and the oh so very analytical side of me wants to plan it out!  Decisons, decisions, decisions 🙂

Had my Mother’s Day Gift setup.  Here is my new HandiQuilter Avante (gosh I have a wonderful husband!).  I am calling her Lady A; My Grandmother’s name was Alma and she sure was a wonderful grandmother 🙂  I figure “Lady A” could stand for Alma, Allison, or Avante 🙂

And my daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren spent the weekend with us camping in Maine.  Although it was hectic I still managed to stitch 4 new hexagon flowers for the GFG quilt.

Monday Morning Star Count 2014/20

The weather finally has turned beautiful and everything is starting to bloom.  It certainly had me full of energy and anxious to make more progress on my Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt.

I was able to add the border hexies to 9 sections and basted 30 ivory border hexies.  I have enough color variation to really start playing with additional layout options.  Here are the 9 sections for this week.

This week I will focus on stitching a section together and possibly connecting to the first section I completed (below):

So grateful for the enthusiasm and support of the wonderful people who are linking up with Jessica at Life Under Quilts.  You are a talented bunch 🙂 and every week I learn something new!  Thank you Jessica for bringing all of us together and sharing your passion with us!

Another crazy week, but still decent progress.  I was able to complete 3 flowers and baste 15 border hexagons.  I really enjoy the slower pace of hand-stitching when everything around me is so crazy busy!

Monday Morning Star Count – 2014/18

Why do I always overestimate what I can accomplish?  Well, I guess it is better to aim high and fall a little short, than not to aim at all!

I spent most of this week finishing quilts for our camper and then working with my husband to open up the camper, put up the summer room, etc.
The good news is, that I packed up a sewing kit to leave in the camper since we will be spending half of our time here until the Fall.  And as you can see, I finished two flowers.
I finally got to see how the quilt I made for our bed in the camper would actually fit and I love it!  Nice to see that my measurements were actually very accurate.  While I was making it, I was crossing my fingers that I did not miscalculate anything as there was no way for me to test it out until Spring!
So here is to more progress next week!  Thanks to Jessica at Life Under Quilts for allowing me to participate in the Monday  Morning Star Count!  You are a wonderful group of people and I love watching your progress and wonderful projects!

Monday Morning Star Count 2014/17

Well, so many distractions this week, but I still managed to get some EPP done!
I finished nearly 2 sections:
I spent time with my sister, which is always fun!  I have been wanting some embroidery designs for quilt labels and lucky for me, she is a graphic designer, fabric designer, pattern designer, and creates wonderful  embroidery designs!
Here is the design she made for the quilt I stitched for my great-granddaughter.  You can check out more of her designs in her Etsy shop.  I am a little biased 🙂
I also finished reupholtering a couch and finished another quilt…I will post more about that separately.
I am looking forward to a much quieter week and plenty of EPP to show off next week!  I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to link up with Jessica at Life Under Quilts for the Monday Morning Star Count.  Stop by and check out the beautiful work!  And maybe join us?

Monday Morning Star Count – 2014/16

It has been very busy the last two weeks with family and work.  I wasn’t able to post last week so this week’s post covers two weeks of progress.  I was able to complete 6 more sections.

Hoping to have more time this week and to be able to sew more sections together to the main part of the quilt.

Monday Morning Star Count 2014/14

It was a busy week and I was sidetracked working on a quilt for our camper, but I still managed a little progress 🙂  I completed 4 new sections.

I started using Thread Heaven and love it!  It really helped me stitch faster with no knotting or kinking.  So lucky to have the opportunity to link up with Jessica at Life Under Quilts!
This is the quilt that has me sidetracked!  The fabric is Reunion by Sweetwater for Moda.  I just love this fabric and since our camper is near the ocean, it is the perfect colors!  Hoping to finish this one this weekend.  I pieced it and quilted it in sections and now it is ready to be sewn together and to tailor the corners to fit nice and snug!

I am very please with my progress this week and very motivated to keep moving!  Funny how actually stitching the sections makes you want to add ‘just one more section’ before you quit for the night.

I was able to add 4 more flower sections to the main quilt.  I added the border hexies to 2 more flowers and actually basted 35 border hexies!

Each flower section that I added made me fall more in love and get more anxious to see it come together.  I know it will still take me quite some time, but worth every minute I can steal to work on it!

Here is this week’s progress tally:

Total Progress Left To Complete
Flowers to Stitch 99 51 48
Border Hexagons ? 147 ?
Borders to Add 99 35 64
Stitch to Quilt 99 8 91

Monday Morning Star Count 2014/8

What a busy week!  I took some time with my granddaughter, Gracie, to teach her basting hexagons.  Gracie was born at 31 weeks, has a form of autism,  and struggles with her small motor skills.  She actually used the needle 🙂 without my help, and stayed focused long enough to complete 7 – 1″ hexies.

When she first started she poked her finger and cried.  I gave her a big hug and told her she would get the hang of it.  Although she was hesitant, she took my thimble (she refused it at first) and put it on her thumb and carried on.  Now for the funny part, when she was finishing her last hexagon, I said, “See, there is no crying in sewing.” and she replied (very seriously), “G-Mom, there is no crying in sewing until someone pokes themselves with a needle!”  I couldn’t help but laugh.  So here she is:
And look at how proud she was when she finished!  She chose all of her own colors and this is the very first time she basted all by herself.  I am so proud of her!
And so now for my progress.  I was able to add one more section and completed 3 more flowers.
And thank you to everyone who provided suggestions for thimbles!  It was very helpful and I ordered several to try.  I will write a separate post next week with the results.  You are all wonderful!
